Ruth Hutchinson was born August 14, 1931 to Edna and Melvin Hutchinson.  She was one of ten children.  Mom had lots of stories of when they were growing up and what life was like.  She talked about the sugar sandwiches and hot cocoa that Grandma made.

Ruth was only 14 when she met Arthur Waskey and they married when she was 17 1/2.  They were married only 8 months when Dad was told he was shipping out with the Navy.  They gave up their apartment and Mom moved back in with her parents.  Dad was unexpectedly given a few days pass before he had to ship out.  Grandma and Grandpa’s landlady gave Mom and Dad her front bedroom to stay for the few days because newlyweds should not have to sleep on the couch at Mom’s parent’s house.  They had wanted children right away and that was where their first child was conceived.  While Dad was away Mom stayed with her parents and to pass time would go to bingo with her Mother.

Ruth and Arty had 4 children.  She had wanted them to be 3 years apart and was pretty on target with Ginny being born June 1, 1950 and Susan being born June 15, 1953.   On the day Mom was to come home from the hospital Dad had dressed Ginny in the craziest color outfit to go get Mommy and baby Susan.  Mom laughed about that outfit for many years.  Their 3rd daughter, Eileen, was born on November 18, 1955.  On June 17, 1958 their 4th child, Arthur James, was born.

Mom loved singing and would play music when she gave little Artie his bath, specifically “Splish Splash,” and Artie would dance and splash the water all over.  When we were all kids we would walk from our house to Grandma’s house when weather was nice and Mom would sing and teach us lots of songs.  She even played a few different songs on the piano.  When the kids were sick Mom would get out the coloring books and crayons and we’d all color.  She’d settle us down on the couch with pillows and blankets and bring us orange juice or even hot tea in baby bottles!

The family lived in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York until they moved out to Levittown, Long Island, New York in 1966.  That’s when Ruth and Arty bought their first house.  Mom didn’t like being home alone all day and she started working in the Pathmark Pharmacy.  She worked there until she took early retirement in 1985 because she and Dad had decided to move to Florida.  They moved in 1986 and bought a house in Spring Hill, Florida.  Shortly after the move to Florida they separated and divorced years later.

Mom loved becoming a Grandma at the young age of 40 and she had a total of 10 grandchildren (Charlie, Jeff, Kevin, Kim, Kate, Keith, Steven, Matt, Charlie Boy and Shane) and 2 great-grandchildren (Gavin and Elizabeth).  She moved out to Arizona in 1986 and lived with her daughter, Ginny, and her family for several years until heading back to Florida and moving in with her son, Artie, and his family.  Mom moved into her own apartment in her friend Bea’s house and lived there until she became ill in July, 2004.  She spent several months at the Hospice House in Brooksville, FL until she passed October 7, 2004.  She was so impressed with the care she received at Hospice House.   A service was held at Hospice House for Mom and attended by Artie’s family, Ginny and friends, Bea and Charmain.  Later in New York a service was held at Pinelawn Cemetary so that Eileen and Mom’s sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews could say goodbye.

Mom, you will be missed by each and every one of us and you will be in our thoughts everyday, we love you.
